Tattoo artists in Washtenaw County are urging customers to beware of a growing scam where fraudsters pose as tattoo shop owners on TikTok, offering discounted or free tattoos to lure victims into paying upfront for services that are never delivered. The scheme involves scammers creating fake social media accounts mimicking legitimate businesses, then disappearing once payment is made, leaving clients without the promised artwork. Local tattoo professionals say they’ve seen an increase in inquiries from people who’ve fallen victim to these deceptive tactics, emphasizing the importance of verifying a shop’s legitimacy before committing to any work. With social media playing a larger role in how people discover tattoo artists, experts recommend checking official websites, reviews, and in-person consultations to avoid falling prey to these online cons.
